Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Advent from the Parables

In Matthew 24–25, Jesus’s parables reveal the true meaning of Advent—not a sentimental countdown to Christmas, but a season of formation that begins in darkness and leads to faithful living. Through the parables Jesus teaches that faithful discipleship is active, alert, and merciful—investing gifts, caring for others, and living as though the Master might return at any moment. The parable of the sheep and goats reveals Christ’s hidden presence among “the least of these,” showing that every small act of mercy is a service to the King himself. Ultimately, Advent proclaims that divine judgment is good news: God will set the world right, heal what is broken, and vindicate truth and goodness. The church, then, lives honestly in the dark, alertly in the in-between, and mercifully toward others—remembering that Christ has come, is with us now, and will come again to make all things new.
