Isaac & Jacob: The Family of Promise

Jacob Meets His Match

This sermon shows how Jacob, the deceiver, finally experiences deception himself as God begins using the consequences of his own sin to humble and shape him. At the same time, the story turns toward Leah, an overlooked and unloved woman whom the Lord sees, hears, and cares for even when those closest to her do not. As Leah slowly learns to look to God rather than Jacob for her deepest sense of worth, the passage exposes our own tendency to turn good things into ultimate things that cannot bear the weight of our hearts. The story ultimately points to Jesus, who comes through Leah’s family line and becomes the rejected one so that overlooked, sinful, and needy people like us might be seen, loved, and welcomed by God.
