Isaac & Jacob: The Family of Promise

Oct 04, 2026 | Matt McAlvey

Our Sister

This sermon confronts the terrible violence done to Dinah and the ways her family makes an already tragic situation worse through silence, deception, vengeance, and self-interest. While Dinah’s brothers are right that what happened to their sister demands a response, their brutal retaliation shows the difference between seeking justice and pursuing vengeance. The passage speaks hope to those who have been sinned against by reminding them that what happened to them was wrong, that God sees and cares, and that his grace is greater than shame and brokenness. Ultimately, Jesus enters into human suffering, bears sin and shame at the cross, and rises again so that violence, shame, and brokenness do not get the final word for those who belong to him, resurrection does.
