Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Signs of the Times

In Matthew 24:15-35, Jesus teaches that history is moving toward a divinely appointed end and calls his followers to live faithfully in light of it. He first foretells the destruction of Jerusalem’s temple, fulfilled in A.D. 70, warning his disciples to flee when they see the “abomination of desolation.” This judgment falls because empty religion has replaced true devotion, but Jesus himself becomes the greater temple where reconciliation with God is found. He then turns to the question of the world’s end, describing cosmic upheaval and the appearing of the Son of Man. While interpretations vary, the passage shows that tribulation marks every age of the church and that Christ’s return—sudden, public, and certain—will bring both judgment and restoration. All of history, therefore, is headed toward the triumphant and redemptive return of Jesus Christ.
