Isaac & Jacob: The Family of Promise

Oct 18, 2026 | Matt McAlvey

Sorrow, Sin, Succession

This sermon brings the story of Isaac and Jacob to a close with the ordinary realities of life: births and deaths, family sorrows, human sin, and one generation giving way to the next. As Jacob grieves the deaths of Rachel and Isaac and faces further sin within his family, we're reminded that faith doesn't spare us from sorrow and that God's promises remain secure despite the failures of his people. The passage invites us to acknowledge grief honestly while recognizing God's faithfulness through all the joys and brokenness of life. Ultimately, from cradle to grave, our hope rests in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again, assuring us that death will not have the final word and that one day even our deepest sorrows will be redeemed.
