Isaac & Jacob: The Family of Promise

Sep 27, 2026 | Matt McAlvey

Still Jacob

This sermon shows that Jacob’s reconciliation with Esau is marked by surprising mercy, as the brother who once wanted to kill him instead runs to embrace and receive him. Yet Jacob remains a work in progress, reminding us that God’s people can experience real change while still struggling with old patterns of sin and need the patient, persistent grace of God. Even after returning to the promised land, Jacob stops short of Bethel, showing again that God’s work in him is genuine but unfinished. Ultimately, the open arms of Esau point toward the greater welcome of God, who through Jesus brings wandering sinners home and receives them with grace.
