This sermon shows God quietly building the family of promise even as Jacob’s household is consumed by jealousy, rivalry, discontent, and misplaced desires. Rachel and Leah each look at what the other has and believe that possessing it will finally make them whole, revealing how easily good gifts can become idols and give birth to envy. Yet through all the family’s scheming and brokenness, God continues to keep his promises and graciously work in people who are still fighting old sins and growing imperfectly. Ultimately, the family’s hope rests in Jesus, the Son who truly lives up to his name by saving messy people like us from our sins and giving us the one thing we truly cannot live without, himself.
