Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

The Meal that was Planned

This sermon shows that the final meal Jesus shares with his disciples is not improvised but carefully planned, revealing his calm authority as he moves willingly toward the cross. At the table, Jesus exposes betrayal without panic, holding together God’s sovereign purposes and real human responsibility while inviting each disciple to ask, “Is it I, Lord?” He then reinterprets the Passover meal, declaring that his coming death is not a tragedy to be explained later but a gift to be received now. The Lord’s Supper becomes a meal of grace that anchors believers in God’s past deliverance, nourishes them in the present, and gives hope for the future kingdom.
