The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins
In Matthew 25:1–13, Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish virgins to teach the necessity of readiness for his return. Ten young women await the bridegroom, but only five bring extra oil for their lamps, prepared for delay. When the groom finally arrives, the unprepared five are shut out, illustrating that some things—like true faith—cannot be borrowed or shared. Outward appearance and association with the church are not enough; what matters is a living relationship with Christ. The parable carries both warning and promise: Jesus will one day shut the door on sin, sorrow, and unbelief—and open wide the feast of joy for those who know him and are ready for his appearing.
