Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Watch Out for Religious Hypocrisy—in Yourself
This sermon warns against religious hypocrisy, urging believers to watch out for it both in leaders and in themselves. Jesus’s rebuke of the Pharisees serves as a spiritual X-ray, revealing the danger of appearing righteous while harboring pride and deceit within. Jesus’s seven woes expose this condition in the Pharisees, who made salvation difficult, trivialized truth, and pursued self-glory. Yet even in judgment, Jesus’s lament over Jerusalem reveals his compassion and his offer of grace to all who repent. The sermon concludes that while every Christian still wrestles with inconsistency, the gospel offers forgiveness and renewal through Christ. Therefore, rather than hiding our failures, believers are invited to “advertise their hypocrisy”—to humbly admit their need for mercy so that God’s transforming grace might be made visible.
