Why the Ascension Matters
This sermon argues that the ascension is not an overlooked transition in Jesus’s story but a vital part of his ongoing work for his people. It shows that the ascended Christ now serves as our advocate in heaven, continually representing sinners before the Father on the basis of his finished work rather than our performance. The ascension also gives believers confidence about their future, because Jesus has already entered heaven in glorified humanity as the guarantee of the resurrection and renewed creation awaiting his people. Far from meaning absence, Christ’s ascension results in greater blessing, as he pours out the Holy Spirit and continues to sustain, guide, and remain present with his church.
